Safari for real Mac Os X (and I assume for windows) has a nice option called "Private Browsing" which turns off the recorded History and a few other things. iPhone does not have this. But it does have options for manually clearing the Cache, Cookies, and History... or so it says.
After viewing a few unmentionable sites via Safari on the iPhone all the above things were manually cleared. But the next day someone picked up my iPhone, went to Safari and pressed the back button and voila.. an unmentionable site popped up. "wow.. how did this get here? hmmm..."
Funny story? Yes. But also a simple warning not to trust the 'clear history' button.
Try this experiment.. On your iphone go to 3 different websites by typing in the addresses.. waiting for each to load. Do this all on one safari page. Then go to google.com - a nice page to come up the next time Safari is chosen. Press the "home" button. Then go to "Settings" >> "Safari" >> "Clear History" >> and accept to clear history.
Then press "home" and go back to Safari. The google page will pop up - it's still loaded. Even if you had cleared the cache it's still loaded. Press the "<<" back button and watch as your history is still there. They do load faster if you don't clear the cache.. but the history is not cleared.
What "clear history" does is remove the pages from the prompt list that safari offers when you start typing.. so that if you type a "i" it won't automatically show you "iPhonePOV.com"
The way to REALLY clear the page history? In Safari touch the pages button (overlapping squares lower right), click "new page" - a blank page will load full screen. Then go back to pages and close the previous page with the little red X. The new page has no history.
